Learning Resource Centre
The school Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is supervised by Mrs Barden between the hours of 10am – 2pm. Open to students at Break and Lunchtimes.
Teaching staff and students are able to make full use of the facilities and services available in the LRC and these facilities continuously evolve to meet the needs of present and future users. In addition to its ever growing stock of books and periodicals, the LRC also offers students the opportunity to use the following resources to support their learning and personal interests:
2 Hard-drive computers with access to school related links and the internet
KS4 Revision Guides for all core and Humanities subjects; following the new GCSE grade 9-1 system
A range of board games: Chess, Ludo, Draughts and more
Dyslexia friendly books used for both pleasure and Accelerated Reader
All the resources in the LRC are documented on a computerised database entitled: Eclipse.net, which is accessible to staff and students from computers in the building or at home through the school portal. This greatly facilitates the use of the LRC as a research tool. Book loans and the operation of Dewey searches are also operated electronically. Students can sign into the online Library (Eclipse.net) to see what the current book trends are, view the ‘book of the month’ and even leave book reviews.
Students are encouraged to regard the LRC as a central resource for them to make full use of to help support school projects and coursework.
Staff and the librarian encourage students to read for both recreation and to support the school’s reading scheme ’Accelerated reader’, which is very popular. Students are celebrated for their reading effort in years 7 and 8, where they receive certificates and trophies.
Students are encouraged to volunteer their time in the LRC as Librarian Helpers, thus developing their organisational, time-management and social skills. They are incentivised for the time they commit. This also raises their profile in the school’s wider community.
